WHY DON'T GIFT CARDS WORK?

As Gift Card Girlfriend, I wrote over 400 blog posts, filmed over 100 videos, and answered over 4,000 questions on my blog and social media channels. Without hesitation, I can say that the most often asked question was a variation of, "Why doesn't my gift card work?"

Here are just a few reasons why sometimes gift cards don't work:

  • Card isn't activated
  • Card balance is lower than the purchase amount
  • Issuer policy (e.g., gift card only usable online)
  • Store policy (e.g., card funds not available for 24-48 hours)
  • Card or card funds expired
  • Card value depleted by fees
  • Card tampering or other type of fraud
  • Stolen funds
  • Store closed, went bankrupt, or is in liquidation
  • Customer error
  • Cashier error

Regardless of why a gift card doesn't work, customers are justifiably frustrated when they can't get answers or assistance from customer support. Even worse is when a gift card purchased at a third-party retailer, such as a grocery store, doesn't work because no party takes responsibility for investigating the problem and making the customer whole. If brands, gift card issuers, and stores can work together to SELL gift cards, they should be able to work together to SUPPORT the gift cards they sell

Consumers deserve GIFT CARDS THAT WORK and CUSTOMER SUPPORT when they don’t.

Ideal Features Include:
  • Accessible and responsive customer service
  • Liaison to third-party providers as needed
  • Ability to report theft or other Issues
  • Reimbursement when customer not at fault
